Body Cells - Nerve Cells (Neurons)

This week our class have been watching videos about our nerve cells inside our body which you can also call our neurons, did you know that we have 86 billion neurons inside our brain and there are only 2 parts to the nervous system.

  1. Hi Charlese, that is a good question asking about why do some neurons look different from others. The very first scientist to identify neurons, a Spaniard named Ramon y Cajal, was also fascinated by this question and spent a large part of his life drawing neurons from different parts of the brain. Some were very simple, but others had thousands of branches, looking a bit like a giant powhutukawa tree. These big neurons seem to be designed to take a lot of information from many other neurons, then combine that information into a single answer that they send on to other neurons. Some of the smaller simpler neurons seem to inhibit (stop) the larger ones from being active. I enjoyed looking through your blog.
